Three comets in one night!

Post by rwilkinson » Tue Nov 19, 2019 2:24 pm

I took advantage of the clear-ish sky last night to catch up with a couple of comets I've been following for a few weeks, and add a "new" one to my collection.
I was using an old Starlight Xpress Mx716 mono CCD camera on the back of my C8 (with a Meade focal-reducer).
Without any LPR filter fitted, I can capture enough data with a series of 1-minute exposures - and these are short enough to "freeze" the comet against the background stars.

First I aimed at C/2018 N2 (ASASSN), which is high up in Andromeda:
Comet 2018 N2 on 18-Nov. 25x 60-sec with C8 operating at f/3.5

Then I slewed down to Perseus, where 260P/McNaught is lurking:
Comet 260P on 18-Nov. 30x 60-sec with C8 operating at f/3.5

And once it had cleared my tree-line, I devoted the rest of the session to C/2017 T2 (PanSTARRS) in Auriga:
Comet 2017 T2on 18-Nov. 85x 60-sec with C8 operating at f/3.5

That's the 85th comet apparition which I've observed at first-hand (plus another 25 via various remote telescope facilities).
