CG5 tripod head repair

Post by rwilkinson » Fri Mar 27, 2020 11:12 am

Last night I had a problem whilst trying to polar align my Celestron CG5 mount on its tripod: no matter how I adjusted the Azimuth-setting screws, the mount head didn't move. I eventually realised that the two screws were tightening against each other, rather than the registration pin which protrudes from the top of the tripod.

As soon as I took the head off the tripod I could see the problem: the registration pin had sheared off:

 I had a rummage around in the shed and soon found an offcut of M6 studding, which I fitted in place of the original pin:

This gave the Az set-screws something to push against, so I was back up and running within ten minutes. :D
